Scientific name: Sphyrna zygaenaSpanish name: Tiburón Martillo Suave Description: the smooth hammerhead has a cephafoil that is long and narrow, its leading margin shaped in a smooth arch without a notch in the middle. Its body has an olive to gray-brown color above, becoming light on the underside. The tips of the pectoral fins are dusky on the bottom. The first fin is high, with a slightly curved rear margin. The pectoral fins are short and straight along the rear margin, while the anal fin has a prominent notch.
Size: reaches from 2.5 to 4 meters.
Distribution: they are found in almost all temperate, tropic and warm waters. While its distribution overlaps that of the scalloped hammerhead and great hammerhead, the smooth hammerhead is mostly concentrated in temperate waters. It seems to prefer shallow inshore waters less than 20 meters deep. Divers are especially likely to see it around rocky reefs. It also occurs at the surface in the open ocean, and forms enormous schools to make long migrations to cooler latitudes during the summer, then returns to warmer waters for the winter months.
Feeding: it feeds on small schooling bony fishes such as herring, sea bass in coral reefs, as well as stingrays, skates and other small sharks.
Reproduction: females reach sexual maturity when they are 2.3 long, and produced a big amount of pups, from 29 to 37. The pups are 55 cm at birth.
