Adopt a turtle PDF Print E-mail

What's green, serene, and a nest diggin machine? No, not a dog from Mars, silly. It's a sea turtle. Now you can share in the protection of these majestic creatures and help ensure their existence in the future by adopting one of your own. You don't have to buy it baby food, or get a turtle sitter for Friday night, but your support will help sea turtles in general survive so that your grandchildren will one day be able to see them nesting and hatching on pristine beaches.

How does the adoption process work? PRETOMA sponsors many sea turtle protection projects on the beaches of Costa Rica. Project VOLUNTEERS walk the beaches at night (turtles nest after dark) and tag, measure and check the health of mother turtles laying eggs.  Volunteers also educate poachers on the beach about the dangers poaching poses to the long term survival of sea turtles. The tagging and measurement data collected helps keep tabs on turtle populations and nesting behavior.

You can adopt an olive ridley, leatherback, hawksbill or green turtle for a donation of just $50.  All proceeds are used to directly fund our turtle protection programs.  Along with the knowledge that you are helping to save a magnificent and endangered species, your adoption kit includes a certificate containing "your" turtle's species name, tag numbers and tagging location, printed on recycled banana leaf paper. You also get a beautiful hand-carved knecklace of a turtle and two turtle photos mounted on recycled banana leaf paper.  PRETOMA will also send you an update every time your turtle returns to one of our project sites.
